Vitamins and Nutritional Guidelines After Hair Transplantation

Author: Op. Dr. İsmail Büyükçayır · Published:

Adequate intake of biotin, zinc, iron, vitamins C and D, coupled with high-biological-value protein, is crucial for graft anchorage and robust keratin matrix synthesis.

Key points

  • Protein & Keratin: Hair is 90% keratin protein; eggs, wild fish, poultry, and legumes promote rapid cellular repair and dermal matrix remodeling.
  • Biotin & Zinc: Micronutrients essential for cellular proliferation, fatty acid synthesis, sebum regulation, and shaft tensile strength.
  • Antioxidants & Hydration: Vitamin C facilitates collagen formation; drinking at least 2.5 liters of water daily speeds edema resolution and dermal perfusion.

Essential Micro and Macronutrients for Follicular Recovery

Newly transplanted grafts undergo intense metabolic turnover. Biotin (vitamin B7) reinforces the structural keratin matrix, minimizing shaft breakage during early growth. Zinc functions as an indispensable cofactor in DNA synthesis and tissue repair, accelerating wound healing across both donor and recipient zones. Optimum ferritin levels ensure adequate follicular tissue oxygenation, while vitamin D3 modulates stem cell activation in the hair follicle bulge. Avoiding ultra-processed foods prevents systemic microvascular inflammation.

Supplement Timing and Clinical Protocols Post-Surgery

During the first 72 hours post-surgery, high-potency multivitamins should be avoided to prevent gastrointestinal upset alongside prescribed antibiotic regimens. From day 4 onward, 2,500 to 5,000 mcg of Biotin may be initiated under medical supervision. If diagnostic blood panels reveal deficits, iron or vitamin D3 replacement should be titrated. Supplements with antiplatelet properties (high-dose vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic extract) are strictly prohibited for 10 days.
